The Effect of Estrogen on Cartilage and Bone in Castrate C3H Mice †
نویسنده
چکیده
The contrasting effects of estrogen upon the pubic symphysis and long bones in mice is well known.'0 `` "' At the time new bone was forming in the long bones the number of reticular fibers increased in the marrow.' Because observations were made only after 30 days following implantation of estrone, it was not possible to determine whether these fibers were associated with the formation of new trabeculae of bone or were remnants of trabeculae that were undergoing resorption and reconstitution. Glycogen, alkaline phosphatase, and calcium salts were demonstrated in the reticular stroma of newly forming membranous bone in pig embryos.' Therefore, it seemed profitable to study the distribution of these substances as well as reticular fibers in the long bones after short periods of estrogen treatment in order to determine whether or not an analogous process occurs in the development of endosteal bone in response to estrogen. Considerable data are available on the chemical composition and histochemical properties of the guinea pig symphysis during pregnancy and after treatment with estrogen and relaxin.4"1 1 2 f " " ' The mouse symphysis has been studied histochemically only with toluidine blue and PAS during pregnancy,' and with toluidine blue alone in castrate mice receiving hormonal treatment.' In the present experiment, the knees and the pubic symphyses of castrate mice were examined with the use of histochemical methods at daily intervals during a 30-day period of estrogen treatment in order to trace and compare the changes in response to estrogen at these two sites.

The incidence of spontaneous hepatomas in C3H, C3H (low milk factor), and CBA mice and the effect of estrogen and androgen on the occurrence of these tumors in C3H mice.
Andervont (2) has recently reviewed the litera ture on the occurrence of spontaneous hepatomas in C8H and CBA mice. It is now well established (1, 3, 6, 10, 13, 14) that mice of these strains may develop spontaneous hepatomas and that these tumors most commonly arise in older mice, i.e., those more than 1 year old. Furthermore, many previous studies (2, 4-7, 9, 10) on C3H and CBA mice have indi...
متن کاملEvaluation of synergistic therapeutic effect of shark cartilage extract with artemisinin and glucantime on visceral leishmaniasis in BALB/c mice
Objective(s): Because leishmaniasis is related to the impaired functioning of T-cells, the use of an immunomodulator can increase the efficacy of antileishmanial therapy in visceral leishmaniasis. In this study, we used shark cartilage extract with artemisinin and glucantime against visceral leishmaniasis in BALB/c mice, and evaluated the synergistic therapeutic effect. Materials and Methods: Th...
متن کاملPotential Role of Local Estrogen in Enhancement of Fracture Healing: Preclinical Study in Rabbits
Background: Effects of estrogen on bone metabolism and its protective role on prevention of osteoporosis are well documented. However, the efficacy of estrogen treatment on bone healing is not well investigated. The drug can be delivered both systemically or locally to the bone with differences in concentrations and side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lo...
متن کاملTrabecular bone changes induced by fast neutrons versus gamma rays in mice
Background: The trabecular bone changes in the tibia of C3H/HeN mice were measured 12 weeks after whole body irradiation with various doses of fast neutrons (0-2.4 Gy) or 137Cs-generated gamma-rays (0-6 Gy). Materials and Methods: Serum calcium, phosphorus, estradiol concentration and alkaline phosphatase activity were measured. Tibiae were anal...
متن کاملEffect of in utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol on lumbar and femoral bone, articular cartilage, and the intervertebral disc in male and female adult mice progeny with and without swimming exercise
INTRODUCTION Developmental exposure to estrogens has been shown to affect the musculoskeletal system. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that environmental exposure to estrogen-like compounds is much higher than originally anticipated. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of diethylstilbestrol (DES), a well-known estrogen agonist, on articular cartilage, intervertebral disc (I...
